Paris Haute Couture Week - Fall 2018

If you don't know, Paris Haute Couture Week started this past July 1st. And for those of you who don't know the difference between Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear, let me explain a little bit about it.

Haute Couture is simply creating the highest quality garments (couture actually means dressmaking). In order to qualify as Haute Couture a fashion house must comply with the following requirements of the French Ministry of Industry and the Fédération Française de la Couture:

• PARIS - The house must have a full-time workshop in Paris having a staff of of no less than twenty.
• PRIVATE CLIENTS - The designer must create made-to-measure clothing for private clients, and of course offer private fittings.
• FASHION SHOWS - The house must present two collections every year (in January and July). The show must be of no less than 50 looks with both day and evening wear.

Some of the most commercially known Haute Couture houses are Givenchy, Dior, Chanel, Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Giorgio Armani Prive, Jean Paul Gaultier, Maison Margiela, and Elie Saab.

As for Ready to Wear (in french prêt-à-porter), these are collections consisting of high-end garments available at boutiques, deparments stores and online.

SEMANA DE ALTA MODA EN PARIS - OTOÑO 2018  

Por si no sabías, la Semana de la Alta Costura de París comenzó el pasado 1 de Julio. Así que si no conoces la diferencia entre Haute Couture y Pret-A-Porter, permíteme explicar un poco al respecto.

Haute Couture simplemente significa crear prendas de la más alta calidad (Couture en realidad significa corte y confección). Para calificar como Alta Costura, una casa de moda debe cumplir con los siguientes requisitos del Ministerio de Industria francés y la Federación Francesa de la Costura:

• FASHION SHOWS - La casa debe presentar dos colecciones cada año (en enero y julio). El espectáculo debe tener no menos de 50 looks con ropa de día y de noche.
• PARÍS - La casa debe tener un taller de tiempo completo en París con un personal de no menos de veinte.
• CLIENTES PRIVADOS: el diseñador debe crear ropa a medida para clientes privados y, por supuesto, ofrecer accesorios privados.

Algunas de las casas de Haute Couture más conocidas comercialmente son Givenchy, Dior, Chanel, Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Giorgio Armani Privé, Jean Paul Gaultier, Maison Margiela y Elie Saab.

En cuanto a Ready to Wear (en francés prêt-à-porter), se trata de colecciones que constan de prendas de alta calidad disponibles en boutiques, tiendas departamentales y online.
